This is not our Canada.
Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at 11:37PM We as Canadians are a tolerant and inclusive people. We care about individual freedoms, including freedom of speech, religion and sexuality. We don't expect our politicians to use their position to favour one group over another, at least when that group has rights protected under the law.
We must stand-up against intolerance and bigotry.
Jason Kenney used his political position to go against the wishes of his bureuacratic staffers, and erase any reference to our Same Sex Marriage rights, in a guidebook for new Canadians. This might seem less newsworthy if this was his first position on gay marriage. Sadly, it is not.
We must question our leaders when they impose their own religious beliefs, or that of a special interest agenda, on our country.
It's a damn shame that we are continuing to fight this type of bias and hatred. It's a bullshit argument when he states that the booklet didn't previously mention gay rights, or that he needed to maintain it's brevity. It's obvious that he used his political office to interfer with good governance. It's one thing to be religious, that is a right and should be respected, it's another when you use your personal beliefs, and publicly awarded power to shape public position.
Shame on you Jason Kenney.

I was shocked to read the audacity of Minister Kenney's actions this morning in a news article, from his previous statement that sure, gays have every right to be married, just not to each other, to his lie to the LGBT rights group Egale Canada that LGBT rights had been "overlooked", though evidence now clearly shows it was his own personal, repeated insistence that any mention of them be removed. His spokesperson Alykhan Velshi's unnecessary introduction of partisan politics (in particular the outdated 15-year old ones mentioned), as well as the statement that it's not unfair because the pamphlet doesn't mention that men and women can marry each other either, is patently absurd.
I was going to send a letter to Minister Kenney already, but thanks for providing the contact information and saving me some time searching.
I wrote him an email last night. I also recommend that if you are writing to an MP (and especially when you are not agreeing with her/him) to cc other MPs/media/your friends. The more people Mr. Kenney is accountable to, the better. More letters cc'd to opposition MPs/media will mean more questions in question period and more media coverage.
Shame on you for such a biased post. Jason Kenney is simply standing up for family values.
Good grief. Well said, Chris...as usual. Thanks for the mailing addy's.
